Most of the top system conferences are full of papers that deal with 'hot problems' that are currently faced by the industry (e.g., issues with data center management etc). I wonder whether it is because conferences are less open to more radical, long term ideas or it is just that very few researchers are doing this kind of research.Fahad Dogarhttp://www.cs.cmu.edu/~fdogarnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9186457242428335144.post-39567330513867677562010-04-26T18:50:52.967-07:002010-04-26T18:50:52.967-07:00Actually, Microsoft has been very good about fundi...Actually, Microsoft has been very good about funding our "far out" research. We've also gotten some funding from other sources, but since I don't work on conventional systems problems it's always a bit of a hard sell...Matt Welshhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04255792550910131960noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9186457242428335144.post-22073623692511125132010-04-26T18:38:13.604-07:002010-04-26T18:38:13.604-07:00Matt, I agree with you. Maybe it's time for you to come out with an updated version?

BTW I think companies are being very short-sighted if it's true that "it's harder to get funding from industry when you're not working on problems that are on their critical path." I would think that industry would be *primarily* interested in off-the-beaten-path research that isn't just duplicating stuff they're already working on internally. Of course, it still has to be relevant to their business, so maybe the difficulty is finding projects that fall into that middle region.David Oppenheimernoreply@blogger.com
